This is my first time using online proctoring. How do I get started?
After making an appointment with us, you will return to our website to log in. After clicking the ‘START‘ button, you are then taken to the online proctoring room where you will go through the following steps. Before you begin, please make sure you are in a private location, such as your home or workplace. Cafés or other public locations are not allowed. If you have questions regarding your location, please contact us.
1. Review the Exam Readiness Guide
Please review our Exam Readiness Guide to make sure your environment is ready to be proctored.
2. Connect to a proctor
You will connect with a live proctor from one of our online proctoring centers via your webcam. This proctor will help you through the exam process and is available during the exam if technical difficulties arise.
3. Connect your screen
You will connect your screen to the proctor. This allows the proctor to see your computer screen and assist with step three so you may begin your exam.
The proctor will need to know that you are the correct test taker. The proctor will ask you to show a photo ID. The proctor will then snap a photo of you for your profile. Once completed, the proctor will ask you to answer a few questions about yourself.
What do I need to do before my exam?
Before your exam, make sure that you test your equipment. You must have a web camera and a microphone so that you and your proctor may communicate.
What time should I arrive for my exam?
Please log into your NBMTM account 15 minutes before the scheduled time of the exam. On the “Certification Application Status” section in your NBMTM dashboard, there will be a button “START EXAM”.
Please note, if you log in 15 minutes after your scheduled time, the “START EXAM” button will no longer show under “Certification Application Status”.
If you have any difficulty with this process, please contact us.
What do I need to bring with me on the day of my exam?
You will need:
- One form of photo ID (i.e. driver’s license, passport, military ID, etc.)
- A reflective device, such as a mirror, to show your proctor around the edges of your screen
Why do I need my photo ID? Will a non-photo ID work?
Your proctor needs to verify that you are the person who is supposed to be taking the exam. Non-photo IDs will not be accepted as a form of verification. Please bring your government-issued ID and, just to be safe, a second form of photo ID.
If you do not have a photo ID, you may not be able to take your exam. Please contact us if you do not have a photo ID.
Does my exam begin when I connect with the online proctor?
No, the time for your exam does not start until the exam itself has been opened. The time spent showing your proctor your ID, verifying your identity and securing your testing space does not count toward your exam time.
How do I schedule an exam?
- Visit nbmtm.org and log in using your NBMTM user ID and password. If you do not have an NBMTM account, please create one.
- Choose the date and time you’d like to take the exam and click Schedule Exam.
Is there a fee for rescheduling?
Yes, there is an additional charge of $30 added to all rescheduled exams scheduled.
How far in advance should I cancel an exam?
Please contact us at least 24 hours before your appointment. If you fail to show up for your exam without notice, you will have to pay premium fees to reschedule.
If you wish to reschedule your exam, keep in mind that exams must be scheduled 72 hours in advance to avoid premium fees.
Are breaks allowed during my exam?
Restroom breaks are permitted, however the time on your exam will continue to count down. You will be asked to sign the logbook upon exiting and re-entering the virtual exam room.
Your proctor will tell you before your exam starts when breaks are allowed and how many you can take.
When taking the BCMTMS™ Exam, a Registered Proctor will be present or you will not be able to access the exam.
Before you can test, you need to download and install a file that will enable the exam to run. This process will take a short time and will not count against your exam time.
The Exam session may be audited at any time and NBMTM has a right to investigate any allegation of violation of the guidelines.

- What is port 1935?
Blocked ports are usually the result of being on a public or shared network.
Port 1935 is a necessary port that is used for the transfer of video sharing over your network connection. If you are connecting through a work or school network, this may be blocked by your network administrator. If you are connecting through a home network, it may be blocked by a firewall or anti-virus software.
- What should I do next?
You may add an exception for port 1935 in your firewall, or you may disable it for the duration of your exam. If you’re unsure how to do this, we advise that you contact your internet service provider for assistance. If you’re in a public location, such as work or a library, please contact the IT Administrator for assistance.

- Wait 10-30 seconds, then power on the modem.
- Repeat process with your wireless router
- Finally, power on the computer and a connection should be present.
- Retest your internet speeds
In order to proctor our exams, we use fancy software called iFlyChat. This allows us to monitor exams in real time and help with any technical issues during a proctored session. iFlyChat software is only compatible with Windows and Mac computers/laptops.

- Open Sound-Recording Device properties
- Check for microphone sources
- Check that the mic is not disabled or muted.
- If no microphone source is listed, open Device Manager.
- If device available, reboot system.
- After rebooting, find the model of computer/motherboard/laptop, navigate to the manufacturer’s website and download updated audio drives.

The self test says I have a webcam, but I don’t have one connected.
This can sometimes be triggered by virtual webcam software. If you have programs like CyberLink YouCam installed, it can create a virtual web cam or screen capture region that acts like a webcam.
The screen says “No Camera Detected,” but I know I have a webcam installed.
It is possible that your webcam is either inactive or not installed properly. Try the troubleshooting tips below.
Troubleshooting Steps for Undetected Cameras
- Refresh the browser
- Try the equipment test in a different browser
- External webcam
- Plug camera into different USB port.
- Internal webcam
- Request to reboot computer. Once rebooted, reload video page.
