Why MTM Certification Matters
MTM certification serves as an essential benchmarker for the highest standard of care. It reflects NBMTM’s core values of compassion and a passion for continuous learning. Patients, pharmacists, employers, credentialing organizations, and insurers hold board certification in high regard. Board certification is considered as the highest standards of a pharmacist’s experience and knowledge to provide high-quality patient care.
Too many physicians and other healthcare providers have expressed their frustration over pharmacists without sufficient practical pharmacotherapy experience. Even though pharmacists learned proper knowledge based of clinical literature in pharmacy schools, today’s healthcare system requires pharmacists to exhibit a real-world understanding of drug therapy and not to simply quote guidelines and references from the clinical literature.
Being an MTM pharmacist requires more than merely reviewing drug interactions and determining proper drug dosing. It requires patient counseling that factors in patient’s emotional state, patient’s financial state, and patient’s cultural state.
Pharmacists with the designated title BCMTMS™ (Board Certified Medication Therapy Management Specialist) demonstrate superior skills in handling complex patient care scenarios that can only be learned through experience and not from pharmacy school or a manual. Indeed, there are other unique skills that an MTM pharmacist must master, such as medical billing codes (ICD-9 and ICD-10) and URAC accreditation standards. These skills are actively sought out by MTM programs.
A BCMTMS™ demonstrates to patients and prospective patients that the service they can expect to receive will be provided by board certified pharmacists who have proven their mastering of the core competencies required to provide the best care possible.
The National Board of Medication Therapy Management (NBMTM) was founded in response to the need for a valid MTM certification process.
The purpose of board certification by the National Board of Medication Therapy Management is to provide assurance to the public and the health profession that a board certified pharmacist in medication therapy management has successfully completed an accredited educational program and an evaluation process, including a secure and proctored examination.
The NBMTM also assures that the board certified pharmacist possesses the knowledge, skills, and experience requisite to the provision of high-quality patient care for medication therapy management. The NBMTM believes that all pharmacists providing medication therapy management should have a fundamental knowledge of the clinical basics to this specialty and that the NBMTM is responsible for the establishment and maintenance of the standards of knowledge required for certification.
